#2015. Jim Justice

One of the most competitive U.S. Senate races in 2024 will likely be from the state where I grew up.   In deep red, wild, and wonderful West Virginia.  Assuming he runs, Senator Joe Manchin (D) will likely have some serious competition.  Butt before that can happen, the Republican primary will feature Congressman Alex Mooney vs. Governor Jim Justice... and a few others.  

I imagine Justice would be victorious.  But at 72 years old, and as a 6 foot 8 inch hillbilly ogre of sorts, tipping the scales at 368 lbs, there's always the possibility he could end up dying on the campaign trail.

This begs the question, if Slim Justice were to pass away before the general, could he still be elected Senator?  Would the Mountaineer faithful elect a dead guy?  Shades of the 2000 Missouri Senate race where Governor Mel Carnahan (D) defeated incumbent Senator John Ashcroft (R).  Carnahan died in a plane crash a few weeks before the election took place.  Missouri voted for the Democrat corpse. 

Out of all 50 states, if, and it's a pretty big if, a scenario like that were to repeat itself, I think West "By God" Virginia would be the ideal place.
