#304. Sweet Columbine

I've always thought it peculiar that nobody ever mentions how the Columbine massacre occurred on 4-20, a day and time usually reserved for getting high.

April 20, 1999 marked the first mass school shooting.  Columbine.  15 dead, 24 injured.  What I remember distinctly was the kid hanging from the shattered window.  And I recall thinking to myself... considering all of the fucked up people who live in this country, I'm amazed shit like this doesn't happen all the time.

Fast forward 22 years.

You always here people say, Americans are so much better than this.  This is NOT who we are!

Just for the record... I rarely beg.  But in this particular case, I beg to differ.  This is exactly who we are.  And you can never solve the gun violence paradox until you acknowledge that specific, ugly truth.

Dedicated to all the Pitt Panthers fans who lovingly embrace during the 4th quarter and sing a rousing rendition of "Sweet Caroline."  Let's see how you fare in the era of Covid.

Sweet Columbine
sonofsaf

Afghanistan, all of your tours are showing
Maybe we don’t know right from wrong
That is the thing
When war becomes a bummer
You have to show that you are strong

Plans, touching plans
Teaching how, shooting me, shooting you

Sweet Columbine
Don’t get killed just knock on wood
Your life denied
NRA you knew it would
Time to die

Using your sights you’re triggered and so homely
Doesn’t matter if you’re a Jew
This will sound curt
Blurting my hate is colder
I can’t abort when killing you

Fun, shooting fun
Reaching out, touching me, touching you

Sweet Columbine
Don’t get killed just knock on wood
Your life denied
NRA you knew it would
Oh no, no

Sweet Columbine
Don’t get killed just knock on wood
Sweet Columbine
NRA you knew it would
Sweet Caroline
Don’t get killed just knock on wood

Sweet Caroline
Neil Diamond

Where it began, I can't begin to knowing
But then I know it's growing strong
Was in the spring
And spring became the summer
Who'd have believed you'd come along

Hands, touching hands
Reaching out, touching me, touching you

Sweet Caroline
Good times never seemed so good
I've been inclined
To believe they never would
But now I

Look at the night and it don't seem so lonely
We filled it up with only two
And when I hurt
Hurting runs off my shoulders
How can I hurt when holding you

One, touching one
Reaching out, touching me, touching you

Sweet Caroline
Good times never seemed so good
I've been inclined
To believe they never would
Oh no, no

Sweet Caroline
Good times never seemed so good
Sweet Caroline
I believe they never could
Sweet Caroline
Good times never seemed so good

Since 1971, Neil Diamond has hosted a grand total of 19 concerts in Pittsburgh.  Always at the arena.  Regrettably, I've never seen him.  The last time he came was in 2015.  He's currently 80 years old and I have a hunch my "Jewish Elvis" window may have closed.  However, my wife and I are getting brand new windows installed in the house (and a door).  So I guess those two cancel each other out.

Please do not share this material with Columbine survivors, Pitt football fans, and/or anyone who's coming to America.
