Kinda reminds me of a Dr. Mehmet Oz rollout on Oprah Winfrey.

A recent poll showed a hypothetical U.S. Senate match-up between Pennsylvania Lt. Gov. John Fetterman and TV personality Dr. Mehmet Oz.  Fetterman was leading the Sheetz-bagger, 46-44, in what is always a close race in a tight, swing state.

If I was Fetterman, and I won a hard fought Democratic primary (By the way, don't take it for granted.  Conor Lamb is well funded and has a Bob Casey-like appeal), here's what I'd do.

The same night, at my victory speech, I'd throw a curve ball and ask my most ardent supporters to remove their "Fetterman" yard signs.  I'd explain my rationale as follows...

We've vividly seen what can happen when the country descends into hero-worship and cult-like behavior (Trump w/ the flags, boat parades, trinkets and chachkis).  Politics should be about ideas and progress, not individuals and narcissism.  Not about plastering your name anywhere and everywhere.  It's my desire to be heard, not blindly worshiped.  

Political signage also contributes to a world of presumed assumptions and stigmatization.  Pits neighbor against neighbor.  Rural against urban.  Rather than display a Fetterman sign on your lawn, I'll do you one better.  I'll show up at your house and we'll talk politics and the future of Pennsylvania.  We need to steer away from the current atmosphere of the extremes, both on the right and the left.  Strive to create a culture built more on tolerance, acceptance and listening, as opposed to the politics of hatred, contempt and demonization.

I'd also mention the roadside litter angle.  As an environmentalist, how you get a knot in your stomach every time you see a discarded political sign along the highway.

Imagine the possibility of a political future that hinges upon meeting with your constituents and sharing ideas.  As opposed to wasting money on giant billboards and printing an infinite number of yard signs.  Might just usher in a new era of politics and turn conventional wisdom upside down.  Nothing better than proving to voters that you're a visionary who's willing to take a chance and try something new... as opposed to just business as usual.

If anyone could pull off this narrative, and more importantly, steal the show from a TV celebrity, I think it's the guy who married us.  John Fetterman.
