#646. Manchin

Having lived in Wheeling most of my life, I've cast a vote for Joe Manchin on multiple occasions.  But when I reflect back on his entire political resume, I'll remember him primarily as a scumbag politician.  Why?  Because he was the Democratic leader who sided with Senate Republicans in blocking the John Lewis voting rights act.

Joe stares intensely into the ring of the Orange Prolapse.

Simply stated, Manchin wants to maintain the status quo in the U.S. Senate.  This is a calculated decision.  It's better for his career if things remain clogged.  And the Dem/Rep split stays as close to 50/50 as possible.  This way, he retains his influence as the voice of reason, a blue leader from a red state.  Major legislation stalls out.  And things stay the same.  Nothing gets done.  The filibuster holds.  

Good for him, bad for democracy.  

That... will be Joe's legacy.
